I have Independent Contractors. Do I need Workers' Compensation Insurance?
Juliet Starrett wrote a great article about coaches as employees. She is a well-known member of the CrossFit Community, but this article transcends to other fitness mediums. She is the co-founder of San Francisco CrossFit with her husband - mobility guru, Kelly Starrett - and a former attorney. She noted that by definition, coaches are employees and should be designated as such. It may provide some insight for you. You can review it here. We also wrote a blog post on how best to differentiate W-2 employees from 10-99 contractors which you can read here.
Please note that differences between W-2 employees and 10-99 independent contractors vary by state. We recommend researching your state laws to identify the correct way to classify your coaches. This information can typically be found on your state's Department of Labor website.
