What is a retroactive date?

A retroactive date is the earliest point in time that your Professional Liability insurance policy will cover an incident or claim. Coverage must be renewed without gaps in order to maintain a retroactive date. If there is a gap in coverage, then the retroactive date is reset to the most recent date coverage was purchased. Any claims reported prior to that date will not be extended coverage.

For example, if you purchase a policy with EnergyPro effective 1/1/2025 and renew your policy without a gap, your retroactive date will continue to be 1/1/2025. However, if you purchase an EnergyPro policy effective 1/1/2025 and fail to renew your next policy until 3/1/2026, then your retroactive date is reset to 3/1/2026 due to that gap in coverage.
